Most governments try to gather support with Propaganda. Propoganda (Information that is most often biased to promote an idea or point of view).

Great examples of biased or misleading propoganda are the Spanish American War and Nazi Germany. We all know the German government put out false information about the Jewish population and battle statistics. But in the Spanish American war, a few New York papers pushed out false information about the sinking of the USS Maine, and awful prison conditions in Cuba. This very much persuaded the US public into supporting a war with the Spanish. Other than World War II, the Spanish American War is a great example of propaganda (Even thought the US Government didn't feed it).
