How does architecture effect the environment?

Architectural choices affect the environment by their manufacture and their effect on energy usage over the building's lifespan. In manufacture of building materials, energy is consumed in production and transportation. Petroleum or hazardous chemicals may be used to produce building materials. Regarding energy usage, Windows allow natural light (may use less electricity for lights), but also increase heating and cooling costs.
