Forests are often described as the "lungs" of the earth. This is because they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide contributes to global warming. When forests are cut down, less carbon dioxide is absorbed and more exists in the air, thus contributing to global warming.
