What are the properties of southern yellow pine?

There are four main species of Southern Pine - shortleaf, longleaf, loblolly, and slash.

Long Leaf Southern Pine is heavy, hard, strong and coarse grained. It is very durable when dry and well ventilated. It cannot be used in contact with the ground. It is used for heavy framing timbers and floors.

Short Leaf Southern Pine can vary greatly in quality but is used as a substitute for long leaf pine.
