What do one or two digit even interstate numbers show?

In the United States -- generally -- even interstate numbers indicate that the direction of the roadway is east and west, while odd interstate numbers indicate highways that facilitate travel north and south.


However, since the numbering system was developed, and because the United States is irregularly shaped per se, and roadways are shaped by geographic limitations, there may be variances in the numbering scheme.
