How does the the atmosphere enhance the condition's of the earth's surface?

An Atmosphere allows for regulated temperature, and without regulated temperature, life can not stabilize. So we would pretty much not be able to form life in the first place. Also, it allows for certain chemical compounds to form and that allows life to exist.
