Newton Booth (born December 30, 1825 in Salem, Indiana; died July 14, 1892 in Sacramento, California) succeeded Henry Huntly Haight as the eleventh Governor of California, serving between December 8, 1871 and February 27, 1875. Following the end of Booth's term as Governor, Romualdo Pacheco (born October 31, 1831 in Santa Barbara, Alta California, Mexico; died January 23, 1899 in Oakland, California) became the twelfth Governor of California, serving between February 27, 1875 and December 9, 1875. Following the end of Pacheco's term as Governor, William Irwin (born c. 1827 in Butler County, Ohio; died March 15, 1886 in San Francisco, California) became the thirteenth Governor of California, serving between December 9, 1875 and January 8, 1880.
