After a series of bad situations including ineptitude, hostile natives, food and water shortages, LaSalle's men lost faith in him as a leader. Starting out with 320 people, the size of his party had dwindled to only 36. To add insult to injury he is said to have been haughty with a bad temper, even alienating those who would have stayed loyal to him. On March 19, 1687, he was shot by two of his men. They then striped him of his clothing and jewelry and left him today somewhere in modern day.
