GOVERNMENT GUIDELINES.
What does the government say? The Food & Drug Administration, which regulates packaged foods and drugs, only specifies a true use-by, or expiration, date on infant formula. It has no requirements for drug expiration dates - just that there is one on the label. So how is an expiration date determined? By the drug companies.
Most medicines in tablets and capsule form are very stable if kept dry and not exposed to high temperatures. For example aspirin or acetaminophen tablets kept under such conditions would still be OK after 30 years or more but glyceryl trinitrate tablets degenerate after the bottle is opened after several months. Hydrocodone would be OK after 50 years also, it is a very stable compound if kept dry. Manufacturers must put expiry dates to protect the consumer in case of inadequate storage. Expensive drugs when expired are reanalysed and then repackaged if OK with a new expiry date. 40 years after WWII the army tested a storeroom of drugs. Only the antibiotic penicillin had gone bad (it is pretty heat/light sensitive) . All other drugs were fine. If you don't believe me - my sources are: The FDA Code of Federal Regulations Title 21
