Why don't osteopaths DO and chiropractors DC have the same initials since their jobs are exactly the same?

In the US, D.O.s (Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine) are fully equivalent to M.D.s (Doctors of Medicine).

Chiropractors (D.C.s) are limited to manipulation.
