In the Red Cloud's War, the United States was defeated by an alliance of the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho nations; and ended with he Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868.

The Treaty was frequently violated by the United States; resulting in the Black Hills war of 1876-1878; and another defeat for the United States at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.
