First, a quick definition of embossing, at least in the traditional sense of commercial printing.
Embossing is when the surface of the paper is altered by giving it a three-dimensional or raised look. This is accomplished by using two dies. One die is raised, the other recessed and fit tightly together. When the paper stock is pressed between the dies, the raised side forces the paper into the recessed side, creating the embossed impression. Obviously, care must be used so the die doesn't tear the paper.
There are five more commonly known dies. Those are: single-level, multi-level, round edge, beveled edge and sculpted. These can be made from magnesium, copper or brass.
Next, you will need to decide what on the business card will be embossed. This typically will be a logo, company name or the person's name. Once you know what's being embossed, you can decide how deep it should be and have the die made.
The die can then used with a letterpress, for example, keeping in mind three important factors: pressure, heat and the depth of the die.
You can get some amazing and creative results with some careful planning.
