Why is one side red and one side black on a automatic shoe polisher?

The red side is for light colored shoes and the black side is for dark colored shoes.

This is because of the different colored shoe polishes. If you have light colored shoes the last thing you want is to do is use a buffer with dark wax traces left on it.
