How did the new ku klux klan differ from the old ku klux klan?

Obviously it was not confined to Confederate war vets. It also was nationwide in scope, at least in theory and not confined to the deep South. The scope was expanded to target foreign immigrants, aliens and somewhat oddly, Catholics.
