Canadian Sports Hall of Famer Victor Davis held the world record in men's 200 meter breaststroke for one day less than 7 years. He first set the record on August 5, 1982 with a time of 2:14.77. He broke that record on June 17, 1984 with a time of 2:14.58 and again broke the record with a time of 2:13.34 on August 2, 1984. That record stood until August 4, 1989 when Mike Barrowman of the United States swam a 2:12.90.
Incredibly, 3 months after his world record was broken Davis lost his life when he was struck by an automobile whose driver left the scene.
