It would depend if you would like your mattress to be higher off the bed or not.

Box springs can be anywhere from 6-10 inches thick.

Most people use bunkie boards (which are usually 1-2 inches thick) as well when

using temperpedic or other memory foam mattresses to make it easier to get on

the bed.
