How did US military expansion change during World War 2?

Some of the more noticable changes that came about involved women stepping out into the workforce in much larger numbers. This allowed the men to go fight the war and still have their jobs or businesses to return to. Taxes were increased to help fund the war effort. The unemployment rate dropped tremendously.
