Why does NC does not have a large port city like the neighboring states to the north and south?

North Carolina's lack of a large port city compared to its neighboring states can be attributed to its geography and historical development. The state's coastline features shallow waters and shifting sandbars, making it less suitable for large deep-water ports. Additionally, the development of major railroads and highways in the 19th and 20th centuries favored inland cities like Charlotte and Greensboro, diverting trade and economic focus away from potential coastal ports. As a result, while North Carolina has some smaller ports, they haven't grown to the scale of those in Virginia or South Carolina.
