You can also take Benadryl (diphenhydramine), which is a anti-histimine, a very common medication for Allergies or if you have hives or mosquito bites, etc. Take anywhere from 1-3 tabs, though if you take 3, you will be very very groggy in the morning. Unlike medications designed to make you sleep, you can stop taking Benadryl and still fall asleep. Taken as directed, trazodone is safe for chronic insomnia; as are most benzodiazepines (Ativan/Xanax/Restoril) or Ambien, though the potential for physical dependence may occur with chronic versus intermittent use. Medication isn't the answer, if you want safe and natural, try an herb. Melatonin is effective, but only take it when you are having trouble as it can eventually hinder your body from producing it's own melatonin.
