It fell into a shambles during the war and was devastated in all ways following the war.
Above is correct the largest reason being that the North took out all supply lines to the South via railroads and disrupted import by sea of which the South depended on. Not only did it ruin the economy it pretty much stopped any fighting chance the South had as it also stopped supply to it's army. After the war new laws were introduced that were aimed at punishing the South for the war. Obviously the law abolishing slavery was one that hurt the South the most.
