Why does some costume jewelry smell?

Depending on the materials being used, some costume jewelry may smell. This can be due to vinyls and other fabric materials, packaging etc. As far as metals are concerned, metals are constantly reacting and oxidizing to variations in temperature. This oxidizing reaction may give some metals certain smells; remember, costume jewelry does not utilize precious metals and thus definitely fall under this category.
