Why did rivalry over empires course tension in world war 1?

This Tension was beacuase Both Germany at Great Britain at the time where looking to expand and widen there empire, this caused tension beacuse both nations feared that the other would try to invade their land. This is also another reason wh y the alliance systems where created.
