Can you connect Blu-ray player to a standard DVD player then to a HDTV?

If the DVD player has a video pass through function, then yes. If the feature is available, there will be an HDMI input to the DVD player as well as an HDMI output.

If the feature is available with analog connections, then the Bluray player can be connected only with standard definition signals, losing the benefit of its HD capability.
