Can a zombie outbreak ever occur?

In the style of "28 Days Later", it is possible. A virus causing a killing rage, yet not giving any super powers to people, could take place. In such a scenario, I would think that those infected with rage would be turning on each other as much as on the non-infected, though.

Making things quite a bit easier for humans just hiding out till it died out on it's own.
