While it can be very dangerous and cause your gums not to heal properly, it is possible to work out after having gum surgery. When you 'work out' or do major exercise it can put a small (or large, depending on how much exercise or 'working out' you do) amount of strain on your gums. If you have just had surgery (i.e., just got back from the dentist/doctor), the strain associated with physical exertion is often enough to cause the gums to bleed, as well as sometimes enough to split open any stitches which may have been used to close the incision(s) in the gum.

It is best to err on the side of caution. If you absolutely must work out or physically exert yourself within a day or two after having undergone gum surgery, make sure the level of exertion is low.
