Helping others is so hard wired into our way of thinking that we are not considered "people" if we don't exhibit the trait. It has helped us survive as a species for millions of years.
Altruistic (putting the good of others ahead of the good for oneself) behavior is a basic human trait. It is shared by many other animals that live in groups. Basically you need to help other people because it is hard wired in your make-up. Without this behavior mothers would walk away from their children, their would be no doctors, firemen, police, charity work, paying civic taxes, people paying wages, concept of personal property - any of the things that make a society possible. Each of these activities requires the cooperation of knowing that if we all cede a bit of our "us first" attitudes to become "it's better for us all"
