It is a series of floating/flashing ccoloured lights seen in the Northern Night Sky, during winter.

It is caused by charged particles from the Sun impacting on the upper atmosphere.

There is a corresponding 'Aurora Australis'.

Aurora Borealis is the Latin name for 'Northern Lights'.

Aurora Australis is the Latin name for 'Southern Lights'.
