The difference in these two things Jesus said about letting others see our good works is the MOTIVATION. In Matthew 5:16, Jesus is saying we should let our good works be seen that others may glorify God. In Matthew 23:3-5, Jesus is talking about the Pharisees doing their works in front of others because of pride. They were wanting others to praise THEM, they were not wanting to bring praise to God. So if we do a good work, the motivation of our heart must be to glorify God, and if any pride is involved, then our motivation is wrong. We are not to purposely go around doing good things in front of others so that they will brag on us or consider us to be something wonderful.
