How did Jacob hersh influence duddy kravitz in the the novel the apprenticeship of duddy kravitz?

In the beginning of the novel, Hersh is the only boy out of Duddy's gang that tells Duddy to ease up on Mr. MacPherson after Jenny dies. He also returns later on in the novel and becomes Duddy's only friend after Virgil and Yvette leave him.
