After World War II, Heinrich Himmler attempted to evade capture by disguising himself and using false identities. He was ultimately detained by British forces in May 1945 but committed suicide on May 23, 1945, by ingesting cyanide while in custody. His death prevented him from facing trial for his role in the Holocaust and the atrocities committed during the war.
