Because his wife was accident prone and was constantly cutting and burning herself in the kitchen. He needed a simpler way for her to be able to dress her small wounds, because the gauze and tape was too large for her wounds and wasn't easy to be able to put on by herself. (So he invented the Band-Aid!)
